Late last year we had a look at Netgear business platform, Insight. This solution brings together devices and cloud management into an easy to use platform. Adding to this solution, Netgear launched the Orbi Pro, its Tri-Band mesh platform for businesses that need a more reliable, easy to manage solution for their shops and offices.
Orbi Pro builds off the consumer Orbi platform with both its looks and hardware with added refinement. For hardware we have the Qualcomm IPQ4019, four cores at 717Mhz paired with 512MB of memory and large 4GB flash memory, this also has a 2x2 Radio that offers 400Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 867Mbps on the 5GHz. There is a separate QCA9984 4x4 Radio that is used for backhaul with a peak rate of 1733Mbps. On the wired side, the Orbi Por offers 1 WAN and 3 LAN ports for the router and four LAN for the satellite, all wired ports are gigabit.
Orbi Pro is designed to cover 5000 sq. ft with its satellite active. It offers three SSIDs enabling separate portals for guests, employees and admin access. Each "network" is designed to be seamless so as you move about in the office your device with switch to the nearest AP automatically, no intervention needed.
MSRP of the Orbi Pro SRK60 Kit in-house for review is $449.99 with a one-year warranty.
The packaging doesn't change much moving to Orbi Pro; we have an image of the kit on the front with branding and its AC3000 class.
The backside goes into a lot more detail on the kit. This includes full specifications, the scope of delivery and support information.
Included in the kit, we have the router and satellite nodes along with power adapters, ethernet cables, and reading materials.
Mounting options are legit for the Orbi Pro, seen above we have ceiling and wall options for both the router and Satellite, with all the fasteners needed for sheetrock installation.
After the hardware is set up, you can run through the setup wizard for Orbi Pro. The home menu is pretty basic with status for your ISP and SSIDs in use. You also have an attached client list.
The internet menu is similar to what we typically see, allowing you to set your internet connection by DHCP, Static or PPOE. You can choose your DNS here as well.
Moving to wireless, we have two bands you can configure; 2.4GHz and 5GHz, they do use a smart connect system with the for the SSID, but you can tab over to Wireless 2 and set up a second if needed. 5GHz-2 is the backhaul between nodes.
Attached devices give you a full list of clients connected along with additional nodes at the top. From here you can use access control via the link at the top to block access to clients if needed.
Performance and Final Thoughts
Testing the Orbi Pro, we started with wired throughput. I was to reach 919Mbps, on par with what we typically see from 802.11ac solutions.
Wireless performance reached 99Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 500Mbps on the 5GHz band. Testing the backhaul, I was able to top out around 516Mbps.
With Mobile Throughput, using my iPhoneXR, we reached a peak of 499Mbps on the 5GHz band. We were unable to test the 2.4GHz band due to smart connect.
Build quality does seem to be a bit more refined with Orbi Pro, I'm unsure if it's a different process in creating the plastics with injection molding or otherwise but they do feel smoother in the hand over traditional Orbi. The tops of the nodes are obviously different to set it apart, but that said the integrated LEDs to serve the same function as an indicator of the status of the nodes.
Performance of the Orbi Pro gave us ~90mbps in 2.4GHz, and ~500mbps with 5GHz and overall wired performance topped out at 919MBps with a 516MBps backhaul at a test distance of ~25-30ft. This is typical performance for an AC1300 class solution.
Management is two part for the Orbi Pro, we have typical WebGUI that gives access to all the basics you would see in a consumer solution. You also have the option if you're already integrated with Insight to include Orbi Pro and manage it from there, this includes full control over the router and any attached nodes.
